Created in the 18th century, this large bottle owes its name to the Latin word “magnus”, meaning “large”.

A magnum of wine has a capacity of 1.5 litres, equivalent to two standard bottles. It can fill 12 glasses of wine.

Along with the magnum, the Jeroboam is one of the best-known large formats. This large bottle was created in 1725 by Pierre Mitchell, founder of the royal glassworks in Bordeaux. Like most large bottles, the name Jeroboam has biblical origins. The bottle is named in honour of two successive kings, the first of whom was the founder of the Kingdom of Israel.

In most wine-producing regions of France, a Jeroboam of wine has a capacity of 3 litres. This generous format contains the equivalent of 4 standard bottles, allowing you to serve 24 glasses of wine.

In the Bordeaux wine region, a 3-litre bottle is called a double magnum. However, in the Bordeaux region, a Jeroboam has a capacity of 5 litres.

The slow oxygenation of wine in large bottles also ensures better preservation. Although Magnum and Jeroboam bottles are larger, the neck size is the same as that of a standard bottle. This reduces the surface area exposed to air in large bottles, minimising oxygenation, which can be harmful to wine.
